What To Do And When To Consult In Case Of Ear Wax?

To avoid ear canal damage, do not attempt to remove ear wax by inserting an object into the ear. On the other hand, you can try to dissolve it yourself with physiological serum. In the case of a history of repeated otitis, severe or persistent symptoms, consulting an ear wax removal specialist is nevertheless essential.

What to do yourself in the presence of a wax plug?

If you have an earwax plug, it is very important to avoid manipulation in the ear canal in order not to aggravate the situation. In particular, do not try to remove the earwax with a cotton swab or other object:
·         Sharp instruments such as paperclips, pins, matches, toothpicks, and jets of water (such as an electric toothbrush) may cause damage to the duct or eardrum;
·         Candles, or so-called "Hopi" ear candles, are supposed to cause an aspiration of the wax plug after exposure of the ear canal to a flame. This method is ineffective and can cause burns to the ear. This is why it is formally discouraged by otolaryngologists (specialists in the nose, throat and ears).
·         You may try to dissolve the wax plug, or at least soften it, to facilitate its removal by a doctor if necessary.

If your ears produce a lot of earwax without any symptoms, no consultation is required. You should make an appointment with an ear wax removal specialist if any of these symptoms persist. Only your doctor can determine if they are due to an earwax plug or other cause. There is no urgency to consult unless you have the following symptoms:
·         Intense ear pain;
·         Flow of clear or purulent fluid, or bleeding through the ear canal;
·         Fever;
·         Persistent itching of the ear canal.
